Highlanders Four-Game Winning Streak Comes To An End In 59-43
Loss At Northwestern
(December
1, 2008) - The UC Riverside Men’s Basketball Team had
hopes of returning from its two-game cross-country road trip
with a 5-1 record, but they had to settle for a split and
a 4-2 mark as they fell to Northwestern 59-43 on Monday evening.
Christian Soto and Brandon Dowdy paced the Highlanders with
12 points apiece.

Women's
Basketball Drops Close 59-56 Game to Bradley
(November
29, 2008) The UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team (2-3) lost
a close contest 59-56 to Bradley University in the second game
of the Northern Arizona Classic on Saturday afternoon at the
Rolle Activity Center in Flagstaff, AZ. The Highlanders were
up by one with a minute and half remaining, but the Braves (5-1)
took the lead 57-56 on a jumper and then sealed the game with
two free throws with 12 seconds left.

Basketball Teams Hit The Road For Thanksgiving
Holiday
(November
27, 2008) - Both the men's and women's basketball teams at UC
Riverside are spending the extended Thanksgiving weekend away
from the friendly confines of the Student Recreation Center.
The men's team is traveling nearly 2700 miles cross country
to face Colgate (Saturday, Nov. 29 at 12:30 pm PT) and Northwestern
(Monday, Dec. 1 at 6 pm), while the women take part in the Northern
Arizona Classic squarring off against North Dakota (Friday,
Nov. 28 at 3:05 pm) and Bradley (Saturday, Nov. 29 at 1:05 pm).

Head Volleyball Coach Sue Gozansky Announces Her Retirement
(November
24, 2008) - UC Riverside Head Volleyball Coach Sue Gozansky
announced her retirement today following the completion of
her 39th season at the helm of the Highlanders volleyball
program. She retires with a career record of 680-519-16. A
national search to replace Gozansky will begin immediately.

Highlanders Baseball Announces Eight Signings For Fall of
2009

23, 2008) – UC Riverside Head Baseball Coach Doug Smith
announced today that the Highlanders have signed eight recruits
who will begin their UCR careers during the 2009-10 academic
year - Kyle Boudreau, Donovan Gonzales, Trevor Frank, Mitch
Patito, Matt Heidenreich, Phil Hollingsworth, David Andriese
and Ben Doucette.

Talks

7, 2008) - The UC Riverside Men's and Women's Basketball Teams
want to give you an inside look at their respective programs
through a series of pre- and postgame Chalk Talks held at
the Student Recreation Center throughout the 2008-09 basketball
season. For just $10, you get a catered buffet dinner while
a member of the coaching staff stops by to give you a scouting
report on that day's opponent. Call the Highlander Athletics

as space is limited to 30 persons per Chalk Talk. Chalk Talks
are open to all members of the public except for members of

Volleyball Season Ends With 3-1 Loss To UC Santa Barbara

22, 2008) – The UC Riverside Volleyball Team (8-23,
3-13) had one more opportunity to tie the school mark for
conference wins in a season Saturday evening by upsetting
UC Santa Barbara on the road. Despite winning the first set
of the match, 25-16, the Highlanders were unable to pick up

Bermingham Named Big West Women's Golfer of the Month
(November
20, 2008) – The Big West Conference honored UCR's Jennifer
Bermingham on Thursday naming her the Conference's Women's Golfer
of the Month for the month of November. Bermingham guided the
Highlanders to a third place finish in the Lamkin Cup/Cal Poly
Invitational in the first week of November with a two-round
score of 146 (71-75). |

Tessa Lennala Accepts Invitation To Participate In Women's Professional
Soccer Combines (November
14, 2008) – UC Riverside's Tessa Lennala, coming off to
back-to-back seasons in which she led the Big West Conference
in goals scored, has accepted an invitation to participate in
the Women's Professional Soccer Combines scheduled for December
11-14 (San Diego, CA) and December 18-21 (Ft. Lauderdale, FL).
A maximum of 144 players will participate in the combines with
no more than 72 at each location. The WPS Draft is scheduled
for January 16 in St. Louis at the NSCAA Convention.
In
2008, Lennala earned First-Team All-Big West honors after
leading the conference in goals (11) and points (27). In her
three years at UC Riverside, the Temecula, CA native scored
24 goals - the second highest total in the program's history. |

Tennis Inks One to National Letter of Intent
(November
17, 2008) - Head Coach York Strother announced today that the
UC Riverside Men's Tennis team has signed Fernando Quintos to
a letter of intent for the upcoming 2009-2010 season. "I
am very excited about Freddy's commitment to UC Riverside!"
Coach Strother explained. "He is a local talent of the
highest integrity, and he shares the same vision for UCR Tennis."
The Murrieta, CA native is ranked 47th as a SoCal B18 and ranked
150th as a National B18.

Basketball on KPRO 1570 AM
(November
18, 2008) - The 2008-09 home season of Highlanders Men's Basketball
tips off this evening against the Sacramento State Hornets
at UCR's Student Recreation Center at 7 pm. It is the first
of 17 games this season that fans can listen to on KPRO 1570
AM. All UC Riverside regular season games will be webcast
via the Highlanders online home at www.gohighlanders.com.

its 2008 All-Conference honors Tuesday and named Highlanders
junior defender David Lozano to the All-Conference First Team

Women's Tennis Competes In Anteater Invitational
(November
15, 2008) - The UC Riverside Women's Tennnis team spent the
weekend participating in the UC Irvine Anteater Invitational
taking on competition from UC San Diego, Northern Arizona,
Loyola Marymount, Montana and host UC Irvine. The event concludes
on Sunday, November 16.

Oki split her two singles matches so far besting Northern
Arizona's Kim Van Ginkel 6-3, 6-3 on Friday and dropping a
close 7-5, 7-6 decision to UC Irvine's Brooke Bartlett on
Saturday. Nadia Sakhakorn won both of her matches topping
Loyola Marymount's Estelle LaPorte 7-6, 6-0 on Friday and
Montana's Amanda Bran, 7-6, 6-1 on Saturday. Nadia's sister,
Yasaman Sakhakorn, won her lone match of the event on Saturday,
6-3, 6-3, over Montana's Kayla Moyse.
In other single's action, Donna McCullough lost a 7-5, 6-3
decision to Northern Arizona's Yumi Hasagawa on Friday while
on Saturday Anna Higane fell 6-2, 6-2 to Valeria Tang of UC
San Diego and Angelique Corpuz lost 6-4, 6-3 to Haley Young
of UC Irvine.
In doubles, Oki and McCullough defeated UC Irvine's Heidi
Kaloi and Hannah Holladay 8-4 on Friday, while Oki and Corpuz
teamed up on Saturday to top Liz Walker and Martyna Nowak
of Montana 9-8. The Sakhakorn sisters fell 8-6 on Saturday
to Montana's sister team of Rebecca and Amanda Bran, while
Higane and Simmons dropped an 8-2 decision to UCSD's Anita
Athavale and Natalie Varnay.

Highlanders Cross Country Teams Finish 12th (Women) and 13th
(Men) at Regionals
(November
15, 2008) - The UC Riverside Cross Country Season came to
a disappointing conclusion Saturday afternoon in Palo Alto,
CA at the 2008 NCAA West Regionals as the women finished in
12th place and the men came in 13th. Heading into the event
the women's team was ranked sixth in the West and the men
were ranked 11th. Neither finish was good enough to advance
the Highlanders to the NCAA Championships.
Brenda
Martinez led the women's team finishing the 6K course in 44th
place with a time of 21:15.35. She was followed by Danielle
Evans (60th - 21:28.61), Cristina Olivas (78th - 21:52.48)
and Ashleigh Pratt (79th - 21:52.83). Chad Hall paced the
men's squad finishing the 10K course in 30:28.93 - good enough
for 46th place - followed by Michael Buell (77th - 31:27.91)
and Daniel Lindstrom (78th - 31:32.82). None of the Highlanders
individual times were good enough to grant them entry into
the NCAA Championship as individual entries.

Men's Golf Finishes Fall Season in Hawaii
(November
5, 2008) – The UC Riverside men's golf team finished out
the fall season at the Kauai Collegiate Invite in Lihue, HI
firing a three-round 887 team score to finish 13th out of a
14-team field. Scott Clayton (San Bernardino, CA) tied for 15th
individually shooting a four-under-par 212 to lead the Highlanders.
